Two formerly family-owned farms will grow into large housing communities in the Southwest Valley.
In Avondale, the new neighborhood will sprout north of the Estrella Mountains on 1,124 acres where alfalfa fields currently bloom with little purple flowers. The planned community, called Alamar, will include nearly 3,700 homes.
The land was owned by the Lakin Cattle Co., which began herding cattle in 1935. Chuck Lakin turned the operation into a feed mill in the late 1960s and the business has since sold pellets to horse breeders and ranchers.
