Democrats who want to repeal Arizona’s controversial immigration law made an eleventh-hour appeal Thursday to Republican leadership in the state Legislature to let their bills be heard in committee.

Sen. Steve Gallardo, D-Phoenix, and Rep. Sally Ann Gonzales, D-Tucson, have introduced legislation that would repeal Senate Bill 1070. But, despite renewed national political debate about comprehensive immigration reform, neither bill gained any traction. Friday marks the deadline for bills to pass through committees in their respective chambers, or else the bills die.

Gallardo railed at Republican leadership Thursday for not having assigned the bills to committees and said that the “black cloud” of SB 1070, which requires police to check immigrantion status in certain situations, continues to hurt tourism and impedes economic activity in Arizona.
