Solar demand rose last year but not as much as the industry had hoped, and California proved that if you have a high renewable standard then you’re going to get a lot of solar.
First, the mediocre industry news. Solar demand was up 5 percent to 29 gigawatts worldwide, according to a report this week from NPD Solarbuzz, an industry analyst group.
Sounds good, but it’s not. The industry was hoping for 35 gigawatts of demand, because it can make that many panels and more because it has too many factories.
It also marks the first year in a decade where solar demand was less than 10 percent. Now granted, when you’re growing at a fast clip, any exec will tell you at some point you have to level off that growth because, well, you’re dealing with bigger numbers.
