The Surprise City Council appointed David Sanders to the open District 5 council seat on Thursday.
Sanders, 42, has lived in Surprise for nine years, and has been a member of the city’s Community and Recreation Services Advisory Commission for the last five. He works as a vice president at National Bank of Arizona.
Vice Mayor Ken Remley nominated Sanders for the spot at the council’s meeting Thursday. Five of six council members voted for him.
Councilwoman Nancy Hayden nominated and voted for another candidate, Ed Cunningham.
Sanders will serve for two years, until the next city election in 2020. District 5 takes in the heart of Surprise, including the city’s downtown area surrounding City Hall.
