For those urging the city not to get into the arena business, it is in the arena business up to its eyeballs.
Phoenix is the owner of a 1992 vintage NBA basketball arena.
Today, the Phoenix City Council will decide whether to support a $230 million renovation of Talking Stick Resort Arena, in which the city would pay $150 million and its lead tenant Phoenix Suns $80 million to make it rockin’-ready for the modern NBA.
Whether the Suns stay or go, the city of Phoenix has a million square-foot building in the heart of its downtown sports and entertainment district that needs renovation. City officials estimate the price at $130 million to $180 million.
