Judge stops demolition of old Smitty’s grocery store in Peoria — for now

A judge stalled the demolition of a vacant Smitty’s grocery store in Old Town Peoria after months of dispute.

The building, which has sat empty for years, is the center of a fight between the city and owner Ron Hassid.

Hassid wants to sell the building for a profit.

Peoria officials want it torn down, calling the empty building “neglected, damaged, dilapidated” and a safety hazard.
