Contracts with two Arizona politicians, including the current speaker of the house, are under scrutiny as part of an investigation into an East Valley technical education district.
Speaker of the House Rusty Bowers, while serving in the state Legislature, was paid more than twice the going rate for substitute teachers in the East Valley Institute of Technology, according to a public records analysis by The Arizona Republic.
Bowers seemed unaware of his exceptional pay until he was contacted by The Republic.
“Why I was paid so well? I have no idea,” he said. “I had a glorified long-term substitute teaching position.”
