Forty-nine people applied to fill the vacant Tempe City Council seat created by Councilman Kolby Granville’s ouster earlier this month.
The deadline to apply was Monday.
The applicants include a former council member, former council candidates, community activists, business leaders and school officials.
The pool of applicants is significantly larger than neighboring cities have seen in recent years. Phoenix, for instance, had 22 applicants to fill two council vacancies last year.
