Ulta landing at Superstition Springs and what it could mean for the future of malls

By Mike Sunnucks | Rose Law Group Reporter

Ulta Beauty (NASDAQ: ULTA) will open a new store at Superstition Springs Center mall in Mesa later this year.

The move could be part of a greater trend of retailers who have traditionally located at power centers going into the traditional mall properties. Malls and retailers have had to wrestle with the rise of Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN).

“Our Superstition Springs Centerlocation in Mesa is set to open in the back half of 2019,” said Ulta spokeswoman Katie Canning.

The cosmetics chain already has more than 20 stores in the Phoenix market, Canning said.

She said most Ulta stores are 10,000 square feet with a salon.

Macerich (NYSE: MAC) owns Superstition Springs Center at Power Road and the U.S. 60. The mall totals 1.04 million square feet. It is anchored by Macys’ (NYSE: M), Dillard’s (NYSE: DDS) and JC Penney (NYSE: JCP).

A Sears location at the Mesa mall closed. Canning said she did not have further details on the Superstition Springs location.

But Ulta could be taking over part of the vacated Sears space.

There is also a TJ Maxx at Superstition Springs which opened in 1990. The mall has had to compete with newer malls and shopping centers opening in the East Valley. That includes SanTan Tan Village in Gilbert which opened in 2007 and Chandler Fashion Center which opened in 2001.

Those centers are also owned by Macerich.
