It’s a lawmaker’s worst nightmare: They get their bill through the gauntlets of the Arizona House of Representatives and the Senate, just to have it nixed by the governor.
In Arizona, many bills fail during the legislative process, whether through losing a vote in a committee or on the floor, or never receiving a hearing in the first place.
Vetoes are more rare. So far this session, Gov. Doug Ducey has vetoed seven bills. He has signed 236 bills into law so far, on topics like lemonade, texting while driving and animal cruelty penalties.
Last year, by the end of the legislative session (which was already over by this point on the calendar), he vetoed 23 bills and signed 346.
