Close to 15 demonstrators gathered outside Eloy Detention Center on Thursday morning for a press conference to criticize conditions and treatment of detainees being held in the facility and others like it.
Speakers at the press conference included two Democrats seeking legislative seats, Eloy’s Sharon Girard, Felipe Perez, and state Sen. Martin Quezada, D-Phoenix.
Quezada serves in District 29, representing Maryvale, west Phoenix and Glendale.
“We’re putting this together to highlight the injustices and the inhuman treatment of our immigrants and of other people that are detained here in this system,” Quezada said. “What we are seeing here in the state of Arizona and across the United States is the privatization of these detention facilities and the prioritization of profit over the humanity of the people that are being housed here.”
