Where’s the restroom for Sparky?

Rose Law Group Reporter Gripe of the Week

A friend of this editor in Texas and I have fun exchanging stories about our states in sort of a contest to decide whether Arizona or the Long Horn state is the goofiest. I think Arizona wins this week.

sparkyAs you’ve probably read, a makeover of Sparky, ASU’s mascot, backfired, and the new design has been scrapped. Athletic director Steve Patterson said the new version was aimed at kids. “I can’t speak to that. My son is 17 months old and doesn’t trust anything with a mustache, mask or no mask,” he said.

The Sparky controversy pulled in as much ink as sales tax simplification.

We’ll get back to it, but note at this point there is no positive proof Sparky is male or female.

Arizona can’t avoid its goofy image nationally, and a bill in the Legislature making it a crime to relieve oneself in a bathroom designated for the opposite sex has made the national media.

This editor, on the golf course, has locked himself in the women’s can when the men’s room was busy. No harm, no foul.

So, the moral of this week’s gripe comes in the form of a question: Where may Sparky legally pee?
