Avondale recreation is most transformed

Avondale residents will see the most significant improvements this year when the $19 million renovation to its second regional park, Festival Fields, is completed in November. The grand opening will reveal a new 2.5-acre community fishing lake, skate park and pump track, fitness area, two new youth baseball fields, four pickleball courts, two basketball courts, playgrounds, a large corporate ramada, ramadas or smaller gatherings around the lake and a new splash pad.

The city of Avondale was named Winner of the Voice of the People Award for Transformation in Recreation and Wellness, the National Research Center Inc. (NRC) and Polco announced this month.

This award is only given to top-performing jurisdictions that best listen and act for the benefit of their communities. Based on responses from the National Citizen Survey, now the National Community Survey, residents reported the highest levels of improvement for this category compared with all other participating jurisdictions.

The National Community Survey reports resident opinion and satisfaction with local government and services with a scientific, representative sample approach. Results are then used to inform budgeting, performance measurement and program planning.
