A division of the Nikola Motor Company has been awarded a $4.35 million project to test the integration of a hydrogen fuel cell into an electric vehicle designed for use in the military.

The National Center for Manufacturing Sciences awarded Nikola Powersports and Pratt & Miller Engineering the project through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Defense Department’s Commercial Technologies for Maintenance Activities.

Of the funds, Nikola will receive $1 million and will work with other project partners to allocate the rest of the funds.

The funding will be used to integrate a hydrogen fuel cell into the company’s electric off-road vehicle, the Nikola Reckless, and test factors such as performance and efficiency.
