Arizona Public Service Co. is proposing to charge $30 a month to customers who do not like their digital electricity meters and prefer to have an older, analog meter installed on their home.
APS also proposes charging those customers $75 to sign up for the special treatment, if regulators approve the new rate.
The company developed the new plan in response to a small but vocal group of customers who say the digital meters disrupt their sleep and cause other health or privacy concerns.
The company expects about 4,500 customers will participate in the program, based on how many have requested that APS not install a smart meter on their home. So far, APS has accommodated those people by letting them keep their old meters.
