A Phoenix City Council Subcommittee will be asked Wednesday to approve a location at Margaret T. Hance Park for a new Latino Cultural Center.

The Phoenix Council’s Subcommittee on Land Use and Livability will consider recommending the North Building at the park for the Latino center.

The city has been looking at several different sites and locations in downtown Phoenix for the new center.

A special ad-hoc committee was created to determine the best site for the Latino Center and recommended the presently closed North Building at the park.

It would cost more than $12 million to rehabilitate the North Building. The city plans on operating the new center for 3 to 5 years and then eventually turn over its management to cultural and other nonprofits.

The capital fundraising campaign will be needed to help pay for the North Building’s renovations and opening the center. The city has $998,000 allocated to kick off the project.
