Cardinals fly the NAU coup

By Joe Ferguson | Arizona Daily SunCardinalFlying

Northern Arizona University has rejected an overture from the Arizona Cardinals to host the pro football team for one more year instead of three.

The Cardinals have said they are close to signing a long-term contract with the city of Glendale to move their summer training camp from Flagstaff to the Valley.

NAU officials, who announced earlier this month they would look into renting out the campus facilities reserved for the Cardinals to other parties this summer, said they were not interested in a short-term deal with the NFL club.

NAU President John Haeger personally rejected the proposal on Monday, saying he had to make a decision that was in the best interests of the university, said an NAU spokesperson.

A representative for the Arizona Cardinals could not immediately be reached for comment.
