Bids are due Friday (December 20) for the potential redevelopment of the American Legion property in downtown Phoenix.
The city of Phoenix owns the property which has long been home to American Legion Post #1. The post was one of the first American Legion locations in the country and dates to the veterans’ group was formed after World War I.
The Luke-Greenway American Legion Post #1 was chartered in 1919. The post had a 99-year lease with the city of Phoenix for the property at Polk and Van Buren Streets near Grand Avenue.
The city of Phoenix is accepting proposals to redevelop the property and soliciting bids from developers and other groups for a mixed-use project with a focus on workforce and some veterans housing.
Downtown Phoenix has seen a number of new multifamily and mixed used project developed or planned.
The city says there are 61,500 employees in downtown Phoenix. The city would like to see more residential development in the downtown core but is also sensitive to the need for more ‘workforce housing’.
