The Yavapai County Board of Supervisors was startled to hear Monday that, if Senate Bill 0401 were to pass, the entire redistricting process done in 2011 to create five supervisory districts-and two members of the board-would be thrown out, and the county would return to just three, until its population reaches 300,000.
Fortunately, for the two unlucky members, the news was an April Fools’ Day prank pulled by Board Clerk Ana Wayman-Trujillo.
During her regular legislative update on bills important to the county, she stuck SB 0401 (get it?) into the presentation. The board members listened in stunned silence as she explained that the bill had just come to her attention Friday afternoon.
“All the districts drawn pursuant to the 2010 census will now need to be voided,” Wayman-Trujillo said. “Amendment language added at the last minute now indicates that a county of under 300,000 population will need to revert back to the three supervisorial districts.”
