With the historic Senate trial of President Donald Trump underway, Sens. Kyrsten Sinema and Martha McSally will be sequestered on Capitol Hill for six-day workweeks and their business will be confined to deciding whether to convict the president on two articles of impeachment.
Sinema, an Arizona Democrat, and McSally, an Arizona Republican facing voters on the 2020 ballot, have approached the trial differently.
The senators have sworn to render “impartial justice,” but the process is inherently political. Even before the matter made its way to the Senate, Sinema and McSally took different tones about the impeachment effort.
Sinema has called on her colleagues to rise above partisanship and weigh the merits of the evidence. She will not reveal her views on the evidence to be presented by the House managers.
McSally has publicly oscillated.
She first derided the House’s impeachment efforts.
Later, McSally said her constituents want her to “take it seriously.”
