A company that specializes in hemp processing was approved for a conditional use permit by the Coolidge Planning and Zoning Commission earlier this month.
Premier Extractions specializes in extracting CBD, or cannabidiol, from hemp plants. The refined end-product is then sold to other companies that use it for hemp-based beauty and health products.
Although hemp is part of the cannabis family, it is low in THC, the psychoactive component molecule found in marijuana.
“Industrial hemp contains less than 0.3% of THC, which is the psychoactive compound, which is why you can’t get high from it,” Jeffery Slater, the co-owner of Premier Extractions, told commissioners at the Jan. 8 planning and zoning meeting. “Marijuana typically contains 10-30% of THC.”
