The Scottsdale City Council is scheduled to vote later today on an agreement with the Maricopa Association of Governments on the development of an Old Town master plan for bicycles.
The county is helping localities with the program and developing cycling plans. The Scottsdale program will total $173,345 with 80 percent coming from MAG and federal funding and a 20 percent match ($34,643).
Old Town Scottsdale is popular with tourists and locals including those using bikes and scooters. Areas along the Scottsdale Waterfront and Arizona Canal. Last year, the Scottsdale Council approved Gentry on the Green redevelopment plans for apartments complexes near Camelback and Hayden Roads. Those plans had a focus on bicycle tourism and connecting the popular greenbelt along Hayden Road.
Bicycle tourism is a growing travel segment with visitors and local taking advantage of bike paths and bicycle friendly areas. The MAG program aims to help cities plan and develop infrastructure and transportation systems more conducive to cyclists and pedestrians.
