Ducey, Legislature end long honeymoon as pandemic takes hold

Gov. Doug Ducey’s honeymoon period that began with his first legislative session in 2015 is long over, as is common with lame duck governors, but future counseling might be able to restore the broken relationship.

It is far from uncommon to see the Legislature and the governor cozying up to one another during the first year of the first gubernatorial term — just as common is seeing that relationship fade once the governor does not face a re-election bid.

Ducey’s tenure is no different and he acknowledged as much in June 16 interview in which he said they “just completed the sixth year of a honeymoon relationship.”

Chuck Coughlin, a veteran GOP consultant who served under both Gov. Fife Symington and Gov. Jan Brewer, said it’s just something that happens and he witnessed it under both governors.
