Gilbert approves COVID mask mandate

The Gilbert Town Council has approved a measure requiring masks be worn in workplaces, stores, restaurants, bars, or outdoor places when residents and customers are not able to main social distancing.

The Gilbert mask mandate exempts those with health conditions that could be impacted by wearing a mask, children under 6, restaurant customers while dining and those receiving instructions from police.

The Gilbert mask order also asks businesses to post information on the mask order at entrances.

Those entering public buildings are also required to wear masks.  The order goes into place tonight at 5 p.m.

Arizona continues to see a rise in COVID-19 cases with 3,246 new ones reported today. The statewide total is 46,689 cases.

Scottsdale, Mesa, Tempe, Phoenix and other Arizona cities have or are in in the process of approving mask mandates to curb COVID-19.

“Gilbert Police will not be enforcing the face covering requirement. We will be assisting with educating the community about the order through various means,” according to a town spokesperson.
