Chandler looks at buying 1,000 new internet hot spots

The city of Chandler is looking at spending $250,000 to buy 1,000 new mobile hot spots to help provide internet access for students.

The idea was brought up during a Chandler City Council study session Monday. The plans would have the Chandler Unified School District buy the hot spots. The money would come from the city of Chandler’s $30 million CARES Act allocation.

The Chandler school district has started its 2020-21 school online because of COVID-19 and will re-examine reopening classrooms on Sept. 23.

The district has requested the hot spots money and the Council effort is being led by Chandler Councilman Matt Orlando. The council could approve the hot spots plan at its Thursday meeting.

Arizona reported 1,213 new COVID-19 cases today and 45 new deaths.

There are now 188,783 COVID cases statewide and the total deaths to 4,199 statewide, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services.
