When state health officials rolled out detailed rules for bars, gyms and other businesses to reopen during the pandemic, they said that enforcement would be shared between the Department of Health Services and county health departments.
But that plan is hitting a snag over how much the state will pay counties to carry out the mandate. DHS sent proposed contracts to enforce the rules to 11 counties and none has signed on. One Pima County official called the $50,000 proposal to repay the county’s expenses “grossly inadequate.”
Meanwhile, tips are pouring into the new hotline DHS set up for people to report businesses not complying with rules that are intended to prevent spreading COVID-19 through the community.
