Governments and businesses shifting to renewable energy has led to a series of massive land deals in Arizona for solar projects, with more in the works.
Vermaland, one of the state’s largest private landowners, has leased 2,000 acres in Gila Bend to a solar developer in April, and soon after leased 1,600 acres in Hyder, which is about 115 miles outside of Phoenix, and 900 acres in Harquahala Valley, outside of Tonopah, both for solar development.

This explosion in solar development can be directly traced to the Arizona Corporation Commission’s December 2019 decision to permit more utility-scale solar development under the federal law known as PURPA. We told the Commission that its decision would have significant positive economic development implications for the state and it looks like that is exactly what is happening.
