Parker adopts ordinance in anticipation of Prop 207

By John Gutekunst | Parker Pioneer

The Parker Town Council approved an ordinance regarding recreational use of marijuana at their Oct. 20 Meeting. Town Manager Lori Wedemeyer said this ordinance is conditional on Prop 207 being approved by the voters, as it will put the town’s ordinances in compliance with the provisions of Prop 207.

The proposal would decriminalize recreational use of marijuana by allowing adults over age 21 to possess up to one ounce of marijuana and have up to six marijuana plants in their home. It would still be illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to possess or use marijuana. The Department of Health Services would be required to create rules for retail marijuana sales by June 1, 2021. Marijuana sales would be subject to state and local sales taxes and a 16 percent excise tax.

Wedemeyer said the Arizona League of Cities and Towns brought together the state’s 91 municipal attorneys to create an ordinance cities and towns could adopt to put them in compliance if Prop 207 passes.
