Google’s biggest advertiser: University of Phoenix

The University of Phoenix was Google Inc.’s biggest advertiser during the third quarter, according to a new report.

Word Stream Internet Marketing looked at advertising and Web traffic on Google during the third quarter. The Apollo Group’s (NYSE: APOL) University of Phoenix was estimated to spend close to $200,000 per day on Google-related ads —the most of any online advertiser.

The Word Stream report looked at how Google generates advertising revenue via paid online spots, sponsored links and click-throughs.

Other major Google advertisers include Ask.com, Hotels.com, Lowe’s, AT&T, Geico and State Farm Insurance.

Phoenix-based Apollo has been under a lot of pressure lately with increased competition from other schools for online and continuing education students. It has also seen continued scrutiny of its financial aid and business practices.

UOP is a huge national and regional advertiser, including having the naming rights for the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.

Apollo is slated to close 115 campus locations and will layoff 300 local workers as part of a new restructuring effort.
