Arizona Senate President Steve Pierce and House Speaker Andy Tobin, both Republicans, won reelection Tuesday and today face competition for their leadership roles.

Pierce, a Prescott rancher had 71 percent of the votes compared to 29 percent for independent Tom Rawles of Carefree, the Daily Courier reported.

Meanwhile, Speaker Tobin and Karen Fann of Prescott both won their seats in the primary.

Democrat and Republican caucuses are scheduled to meet today to pick their leaders for the 2012-2013 session. Sen. Andy Biggs is running against Pierce for Senate president, and Maricopa’s Steve Smith, who termed out in the Senate and was elected to the House, takes on Tobin for speaker.

Tuesday’s legislative elections could decide who emerges as president, speaker, majority and minority leaaders and whips.
