With Suntech Power slowing down production at its Goodyear facility and laying off 50 workers, local officials were quick to blame the federal government for recently imposed tariffs as one of the root causes, reports Phoenix Business Journal.

The company last week announced it was cutting production at the Arizona plant to one-third its current output, the result of an oversupply of panels on the market and a new tariff system aimed at Chinese solar panels.

Barry Broome, president and CEO of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council told the newspaper the prohibitive tariffs being leveraged are wholly unfair and send the wrong message to China.

GPEC was the group that helped Goodyear land Suntech, first Chinese company with a solar photovoltaic panel assembly line in the U.S.

The ITC decision, more than a year in the making, was finalized last week with a nearly 40 percent tariff levied against Suntech.
