A new legislative session begins Jan. 14, and Southeast Valley business owners want lawmakers have three priorities for lawmakers: simplify the sales-tax and unemployment-benefits systems and overhaul education funding.
Those issues are among the legislative priorities of the East Valley Chambers of Commerce Alliance, a group representing seven East Valley chambers that include about 5,500 member businesses.
“The main purpose of pushing unemployment-benefits reform is to simplify the process … and to better clarify who’s eligible for benefits,” said Kathy Tilque, president and CEO of the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce.
She called the unemployment law cumbersome and costly, and said it leaves too much open for interpretation.
Chandler chamber President/CEO Terri Kimble said that when a worker files for unemployment pay, “a lot of businesses have to jump through a lot of hoops” and incur too many costs.
