State land department getting ready for Tucson area real estate resurgence

in the Houghton Road Corridor, which they’re already referring to as the HRC.

“The HRC is definitely one of our core focus areas. It is probably going to be the place to see a lot of interest here,” said Vanessa Hickman, commissioner of the Arizona State Land Department.

“In general, we’ve fielded a few calls about the Tucson area but haven’t seen anything specific. Maybe another year. For Phoenix metro, we’re seeing a resurgence,” she added.

Hickman, keynote speaker at a March 15 Metropolitan Pima Alliance forum, said land management and development now operates in “a new reality.” Since the collapse of the housing market, the department has worked to re-plan and re-prioritize state trust land parcels, especially “superblocks” that are larger than 500 acres.

The HRC is a superblock of 12,000 undeveloped acres on Tucson’s southeast edge.
