The Arizona Corporation Commission is taking its first, albeit tentative, steps to examine whether to deregulate the state’s electric markets and introduce open competition for consumers.
Commissioners decided Thursday to set up two public meetings and gather information from various stakeholders about whether Arizona will follow the path of several other states.
Such a move would mean residential and business customers potentially could dump Arizona Public Service Co. or Tucson Electric Power as a service provider and opt to buy power from a third-party wholesaler.
Commission Chairman Bob Stump and Commissioner Gary Pierce each called making such a decision one of the biggest the commission has ever undertaken, and that they should give the public ample time to provide input.
