[COLUMN] Thanks to Fritz Behring for ‘unblemished’ service

County Manager Fritz Behring deserves congratulations on his selection as Scottsdale City Manager.  However, his success is Pinal County’s challenge.

BehringMr. Behring’s service is widely and deservedly viewed as setting a high standard of professionalism and non-partisan administration.  His wise management and fiscal responsibility has kept Pinal County government functioning effectively despite serious budgetary challenges brought on by a national economic downturn and negative publicity for the county caused by imprudent and self-serving antics of Sheriff Paul Babeu, along with various investigations of questionable misuse of public resources for political gain, one of which is still not completed by the U.S. Office of Special Counsel.

The county manager has managed to protect our county’s image and our taxpayers’ resources with his consistently honest, responsible and transparent management of public policies adopted by both the present and previous board of supervisors.  Non-partisanship must always be the overriding attribute of the board’s leadership and of the county manager thus allowing effective conduct of the county’s business.  While changes in individual membership on the board understandably occur from time to time, the county manager responsible for carrying out the board’s agenda and the county’s business must always be a constant anchor regardless of board membership changes.
