Three individuals active or formerly active in Surprise politics and one newcomer are vying to fill an upcoming vacancy on the City Council.

Leo Mankiewicz, Matthew Bieniek, Cammie Marceaux and Bill Lipscomb all submitted applications to the city clerk’s office for the 5th District (Palm) seat being vacated by the retiring Mike Woodard.

Mr. Woodard submitted his resignation to Clerk Sherry Aguilar May 7, citing his desire to begin retirement early. The 1-term incumbent declined to seek re-election this year and was due to leave the seven-member governing body Dec. 31.

The clerk’s office began accepting applications May 14 to fill the remaining 7 months of Mr. Woodard’s term. One of the hopefuls, Ms. Marceaux, is also running in this year’s primary for a full 4-year term that begins in January. Council elections also are being held this year for seats in District 1 (Acacia) and District 6 (Palo Verde).

Of the remaining three candidates for the 7-month unexpired term, all have served the community either in elected or appointed official positions.
