Gilbert might tweak code to end ‘revolving door’ short-term rentals

A Gilbert resident’s complaint that short-term vacation homes have created a “revolving door” in her condominium complex has prompted town officials to consider extending a ban on vacation rentals to multifamily complexes.

GilbertHundreds of home listings in Gilbert and many more across the Valley are advertised on vacation-rental websites with monthly, weekly and nightly rates, and many violate town zoning code, which limits hotel-type properties to commercial areas.

Gilbert already prohibits short-term rentals in single-family neighborhoods, but enforcing the code can be difficult and is typically attempted only when prompted by a neighbor’s complaint.

That’s exactly what Karen Cwiak did when she notified town officials about several suspected vacation rentals popping up in the Ikon Hayfield condo complex near Gilbert Road and Houston Avenue.
