State investigators have found no basis to the Eloy mayor’s complaint about activities of Belinda Akes in her dual role as a member of the city council and her job running the local chamber of commerce.
In August 2012, a criminal investigation was launched by a complaint with the Attorney General’s Office from Mayor Joseph Nagy, alleging possible conflict of inter- est by Akes. After nearly nine months, the Attorney General’s Office announced its findings in favor of the chamber.
“The person involved has been exonerated,” attorney general’s press secretary Stephanie Grisham told the Eloy Enterprise.
One allegation of conflict of interest was Councilwoman Akes had voted on appropriations for the chamber. The investigation determined she had in fact abstained from voting.
