New standardized building codes are facing an uphill battle for adoption in Gilbert as conservatives rally against what they see as an overreach of government regulation.
The codes establish minimum standards for building safety and quality and have strong support from the business community, including Gilbert’s two largest business organizations.
Some town council members, however, are pushing to delete large sections from the newest code update, including anything they deem to be unrelated to “life safety.”
The council discussed the proposed building codes publicly for the first time in a study session Tuesday, and the group could take a formal vote as soon as Aug. 15 .
