Constable conduct comes under scrutiny

A current Arizona Constable, who asked not to be identified because he fears reprisal, said that a core group of men have been draining the city, county and state of thousands of dollars a year.

If documents obtained by The Glendale Star are legitimate, a number of Maricopa County constables may have engaged in fraud, threats of violence and passing their work off to assistants while claiming they did the work themselves.

“I have been threatened by these men while eating lunch in a public place,” said the source. “Called names and been told that I am ‘F—ing with a good thing’, when all I want is the truth to get out. We have too many good constables that are working their butts off and these guys are draining the system for not doing the work.”

Constables execute and return writs of possession or evictions, orders of protection and orders prohibiting harassment, summon jurors, serve criminal and civil summons and subpoenas among other things. They earn from between $61,000 to $68,000 a year and are expected to deliver all writs within five days of issuance.

Each constable has been appointed a deputy constable that is supposed to assist the constable with their days off, vacations, disability, warrants, and assistance while serving papers, and any overflow work.
