Wrigley Field is arguably the most uniquely historic Major League ballpark.
The Chicago Cubs have been perennial losers there and have not been in the World Series since 1908, prompting a sports wag to declare, “Every ball team has a bad century now and then.”
The Arizona Diamondbacks are having a bad season at 6 and 18, two of those losses to the Cubs on Monday and Tuesday.
Today (April 23) is the 100th Birthday of Wrigley Field. The day had a party atmosphere — fans wearing birthday caps, players donning retro uniforms, stands full of Happy Birthday, Wrigley placards and hundreds of balloons flying over Waveland Avenue.
The TV camera focused numerous times on a young boy who obviously was pulling for his hometown team.
As the game went into the 9th inning, the Diamondbacks — down 5-2 — began hitting. With each Arizona hit and score, the TV camera showed the little boy in near tears. He probably was not aware of the Cubbies history over many years of blowing games in the last inning.
Arizona pulled it out, broke the kid’s heart and spoiled the party in the “friendly confines.”
Party poopers!
