Tesla says four states still in the running for $5B factory; will push again for changing sales rules

TeslaA Tesla company spokesman tells Phoenix Business Journal the original four states considered for locating a $5B ion battery plant are still in the running — Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Nevada.

Alexis Georgenson says Tesla is looking at places such as Tucson, Pinal County and Buckeye in Arizona, Reno, Nev., Albuquerque, N.M., and San Antonio, Texas, for the 6,500-worker factory.

A number of site selection and real estate executives believe a site at the Reno Stead Airport in northern Nevada is the front-runner to land the much-coveted plant.

The company was unsuccessful in its bid to get the Arizona Legislature to change auto sales rules to allow Tesla to sell directly to consumers.

Car dealers opposed the bill, and a pro-Tesla bill has died in the Arizona Senate.

Georgenson said Tesla would try again in 2015.
