In less than two years, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors went from comb-overs and bolo ties to hair gel and sleek suits, from old-time politicos trying to keep county money in the bank to business-suit conservatives hoping to cut taxes.
The makeup of the board had been static for more than a decade; the five members had all stayed 16 to 20 years. But within the past two years, three of the five have left, just plain worn out by scandal and the battle fatigue of political wars between the board and the sheriff and other elected county officials.
Now a fourth supervisor, Mary Rose Wilcox, has left to run for Congress, hoping to follow retiring U.S. Rep Ed Pastor to Washington, D.C., just as 21 years ago, she followed him onto the board of supervisors, leaving a new board to face a new time.
