Young families flee housing market, forcing builders to focus on boomers

When Karen and Steve were looking to buy a home after renting, they focused on urban areas close to restaurants, shopping, and places to bike and walk their dogs. They considered downtown Phoenix before opting to buy a condominium in the Sage development in Old Town Scottsdale — close to the Arizona Canal, Scottsdale Fashion Square and the area’s arts scene and nightlife.

But Steve and Karen (who asked that their last names not be used) aren’t the traditional urban-living demographic in most big U.S. cities. She’s in her late 50s, and he’s 60.
