Cardinals deny Glendale councilman’s statement at Senate hearing on casino

Councilmember Gary Sherwood may be in more hot water after claiming at the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs Sept. 17 that the Arizona Cardinals and Coyotes supported the West Valley Casino and Resort.

Both have sent letters to the city claiming that they are not in favor of the casino project and that Sherwood does not represent their stance on this issue.

“Over the course of this saga, since last fall when we started having informal discussions with (the Tohono O’odham), the Cardinals in general were in favor of it,” Sherwood said. “Did we go to Michael Bidwill? No. But the Cardinals in general were in favor of it. They said anything that would bring new business to the area, why would they be against it.”
