New ozone standards could put Ariz. out of compliance

Stricter smog standards proposed by the Obama administration Wednesday are drawing praise from clean-air advocates in Arizona.

But some Republicans and business leaders are criticizing the proposed standards, saying they will lead to costly compliance measures that will stifle the economy.

Under the Environmental Protection Agency’s new proposal, nearly all of Arizona’s 15 counties could be out of compliance. Agencies would have to work locally or regionally to reduce pollutant-forming emissions of nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds from sources including vehicles, power plants and factories.
