It would be easy to believe that Chris Spinella and Apriva, the Scottsdale software engineering company he runs, were fated to wind up in metro Phoenix.
The 54-year-old attended Arizona State University as an undergraduate and enjoys life here. Spinella worked outside the area for a time, but returned and Apriva has blossomed, directly supporting 240 jobs, mostly for engineers, who make between $60,000 and $120,000 depending on their experience and skills.
They are the kind of jobs that provide more stability and send money rippling more widely through the regional economy. These are the jobs that metro Phoenix wants more of as it hopes to move away from an economy highly dependent on population growth and real estate.
