When Kristin Vehring and her husband, Jon, bought their dream retirement home in the Sarah Ann Ranch community in Surprise three years ago, they didn’t imagine that giant high-voltage power lines would be erected in the greenbelt behind their backyard — a location they paid extra to get.
That’s because there were no houses in the community near Loop 303 and Cactus Road when regulators approved the power-line route nearly 10 years ago, and many residents said they weren’t properly informed about the project before buying a home. Now, they’re trying to stop it, or at least force changes.
It’s the latest skirmish in battles that have erupted from Peoria to Goodyear to Buckeye as people have sought, sometimes successfully, to move power lines away from their neighborhoods.
