LAS CIENEGAS NATIONAL CONSERVATION AREA — Randy Serraglio extends a solemn Vulcan Salute toward the stream dribbling through Empire Gulch.

“Live long and prosper, my friends,” he quietly intones to the threatened Chiricahua Leopard Frogs floating camouflaged among the duckweed and watercress.

Gaunt and goateed, Serraglio — the Center for Biological Diversity’s Southwest conservation advocate — turns and hikes out of the ravine, leaves on cottonwood trees rustling overhead.
