Construction employment lags in March

The construction industry added 700 jobs in March in Arizona, a 0.7% increase from February but only half the ten-year average gain of 1,400 jobs from 2005 to 2014.

Construction was one of seven major sectors that increased employment. Eleven major sectors are tracked by the Office of Employment and Population Statistics in the Arizona Department of Administration.

The office’s latest report said that overall, the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped three-tenths of a percentage point from 6.5% in February to 6.2% in March.  A year ago, it was 7%.

Arizona’s unemployment rate is higher than the U.S. unemployment rate, which remained unchanged at 5.5% in March, trending much lower than the 6.6% of a year ago.
